History of the Kuritawase Cultivar
The Kuritawase cultivar was developed on Tanegashima Island in the early 20th century by Kurita Mosaburo who moved to the island in 1908 from Shizuoka. He brought tea plant seeds with him and developing tea fields in the mountains of the island. His son Seiichi continued developing tea plants from those seeds. In 1927, Sugiyama Hikosaburo, the father of the widely grown Yabukita cultivar, visited Tanegashima and identified one plant as a candidate for further research. It was propagated and sent to the Kagoshima tea research center for further development. In 1966, it was finally registered as an early budding tea plant ideal for sencha production.
